Peterborough Panthers: Premiership club to stay at East of England Arena in 2023

Peterborough Panthers will be able to continue racing at their East of England Arena in 2023.

Plans by the site’s owners AEPG for a £50m regeneration of the area have been delayed, so the club will not have to move out for at least another year.

Panthers owner Buster Chapman has identified two potential new sites and will now continue assessing them.

The club were formed in 1970 and won the Premiership title for the first time in 15 years in 2021.

“After a lot of negotiation with AEPG, the stadium operators, I’m pleased to say that next year we will have a full season running at Peterborough speedway,” said Chapman.

“It gives us time now to look for a new permanent base and hopefully we can have the time to get a new venue ready and built to keep Peterborough speedway going.

“The search is on, there are places we could go to, but you have to get the planning (permission), that’s the hardest part, but the fight will go on and I do believe Peterborough will find a new venue.”

AEPG (Asset Earning Power Group) and the East of England Agricultural Society plan to transform the entire 165-acre East of England Showground site with a leisure village, conference facilities and housing.

It is expected to create 400 new jobs.

“We knew the importance of allowing the Peterborough Panthers and the speedway track more time to plan their future, and when the land development plan was accelerated in June, it appeared to require the closure of the speedway facilities much earlier than the previous development agreement had anticipated,” said AEPG chief executive Ashley Butterfield.

“We have worked tirelessly with the Panthers, and other stakeholders, to secure everyone’s agreement on a change to the development plan that allows the team to use the speedway track and grandstand until the end of the racing season in 2023. I’m grateful to everyone involved in reaching this decision.”

Following their title success last year, the 2022 campaign has not gone according to plan for the Panthers.

They lost 46-44 at home to Belle Vue on Thursday in their final meeting and will finish bottom of the table.

50-Acre leisure hub will be focal point for development

The new operator of Peterborough’s Showground has revealed how a 50-acre leisure hub will be the focal point of a multi-million pound development of the venue.

The new operator of Peterborough’s Showground has revealed how a 50-acre leisure hub will be the focal point of a multi-million pound development of the venue. Ashley Butterfield (46) is chief executive of Asset Earned Power Group (AEPG), which has been chosen to oversee a major residential and leisure development of the 165-acre East of England Showground. Mr Butterfieldsaid a publicly accessible ‘competitive socialisation’ leisure hub spread over 50 acres of the site would be at the heart of the planned development of the showground.

He said: “We estimate the cost of the leisure facilities will be about £12 million to £15 million and we expect work on this to begin soon.”
It was announced late last week that AEPG had entered into a land promotion agreement with the East of England Agricultural Society.

The deal involved the purchase of the event catering business, East of England Showground Services, from the society. Mr Butterfield, whose professional background features leisure, health, fitness and development, said: “Our ambition is to create facilities that will provide active leisure for people of all ages that is fun for all in a social environment. “The focus will be on providing soft competitive sport from bowling and mini-golf to axe throwing.”

Mr Butterfield also vowed there would be a future for the existing Arena and Events Centre in the development. He said: “The Arena and Events Centre is a huge asset for the showground and our intention is to keep the buildings and facilities and to enhance them.
“The leisure development will take place around the arena and we are confident the development will create in excess of 400 jobs. “AEPG has been created specifically for this project and the team has an array of expertise.

“We had been talking to the society for more than 13 months about this partnership and we are excited by the challenge.” However, a significant part of the proposed development of the showground, which has been operated by the agricultural society since 1916, will be a large swathe of housing. Mr Butterfield said the number of homes to be built would be decided in discussion with Peterborough City Council.

While the agricultural society still owns theshowground land, Mr Butterfield said the land would eventually be sold to the ‘right and chosen developer’.

He said it was hoped to submit a planning application to the council next spring with development works likely to start in 2024 and would take five years to complete.

He added: “We envisage it will be mix of housing types, It is a large site and is an opportunity to achieve a large number of homes.”

Peterborough: East of England Showground development

Peterborough: East of England showground’s major outdoor shows to leave.

Some major spectator events will no longer be held at the East of England Showground.
Asset Earning Power Group (AEPG), which owns the venue’s operators, is planning a £50m leisure resort development at the large site to the west of Peterborough.
The venue’s head of events said it would “have to say farewell to some fantastic outdoor shows” after 2023.

But she added it was “very excited” for future events at the arena.
The 165 acre (66.7 hectare) showground, formally called the East of England Arena and Events Centre, has been the venue for shows such as Truckfest, MCN, Motorhomes, Plantworx, and Antiques.
The centre said the 2023 events for all of these would go ahead, but after 1 July next year the shows would either “dynamically change to fit the venue or move to new homes”.
It added it was “working with organisers” about what would happen.

The venue is also the home of the Peterborough Panthers speedway team, which said it was seeking urgent talks over the redevelopment plans.
AEPG, which owns East of England Showground Services Ltd, said it had embarked on a £50m regeneration plan to develop the site into a “purpose-built leisure resort” and mark a departure from the site’s history as an outdoor event space.

The plans includes new conference facilities, accommodation and a health and wellness centre.
The land had also been earmarked for housing development as part of the Peterborough City Council Local Plan. The number of properties has not been confirmed, but AEPG said it was working with the council to create “a housing development that meets the needs of the local area”.

Initial proposals were unveiled last year when AEPG began working with the East of England Agricultural Society to promote the land for development.
It now wants to submit an application to achieve planning permission before 1 July 2023.
Chief executive officer, Ashley Butterfield, said: “The showground will be transformed by this significant investment, creating up to 500 new jobs and many new leisure and entertainment opportunities for Peterborough.”

Head of events at the arena, Pamela Newbould, said the development “won’t change how the majority of our regular indoor shows and events are run”.
“We’re contacting all of our customers to walk them through how the development will affect their events, if at all,” she said.
“We will have to say farewell to some fantastic outdoor shows we’ve worked with over the years, and not without sadness, but as our venue evolves to meet the needs of modern events and experiences, we are very excited for the future of shows, conferences and exhibitions at the arena.”

The site will be operating normally until 1 July 2023, she added.
Lee Sharp, managing director of East of England Showground Services, said: “This is one of the largest projects of its kind in the country at this time, it’s a big moment for the venue and a big moment for Peterborough.”

£50m event & leisure regeneration plan at East of England Arena

AEPG reveals up to £50M event & leisure regeneration plan at East of England Arena.

In an announcement to staff and stakeholders today, June 21, 2022, Asset Earning Power Group (AEPG) the owners of East of England Showground Services Ltd (operators of East of England Arena) revealed that it has embarked on a £50M regeneration plan to develop the venue into a purpose-built event & leisure resort, including new conference facilities, accommodation, a health & wellness centre as part of the leisure village, completely transforming the venue from an existing showground into a modern and versatile event and hospitality destination.

Although plans for the exact nature of the venue and housing development are in their early stages, AEPG has a clear vision of the venue’s future offering and plans to build a leisure event village with restaurants, competitive socializing and sports establishments, a conference complex, and dedicated accommodation.

The showground is home to some of the UK’s biggest outdoor live events. Showground services has built up a fantastic relationship with the event community and will continue to work with their clients to support them in their future endeavours. The showground development will provide a versatile year-round offering that features modern, multi-purpose conferencing facilities and accommodation alongside leisure and retail spaces, and the existing 6000m2 indoor arena complex.

Pamela Newbould, Head of Events, East of England Arena, described how the changes were being felt by East of England Arena’s customers: “Fundamentally this development won’t change how the majority of our regular indoor shows and events are run, and we will soon be able to offer facilities to bring new kinds of events to Peterborough. The site will be operating normally until July 1, 2023, and we’re contacting all of our customers to walk them through how the development will affect their events, if at all.

“We will have to say farewell to some fantastic outdoor shows we’ve worked with over the years, and not without sadness – but as our venue evolves to meet the needs of tomorrow’s events, and attracts more staying visitors to the leisure resort, we are very excited for the future of shows, conferences and exhibitions in the city.”

The city is looking forward to considerable positive change over the next 5-10 years, with a new purpose-built university opening soon, the council’s City Plan and Cultural Strategy both in effect, and a bid for City of Culture scheduled for 2029.

The regeneration of the East of England Arena and the development of the showground land into housing and leisure, will bolster these initiatives – helping to make Peterborough a city to be proud of, and creating a cultural, leisure and event destination for the whole country.

As Lee Sharp, as MD of East of England Showground Services, explained, the development project is a big departure from the East of England Arena’s history as a showground and outdoor event space, “Our vision for the future of the venue is to offer an exciting and innovative facility and a flagship new event destination for the UK. This is one of the largest projects of its kind in the country at this time, it’s a big moment for the venue and for Peterborough too.”

The search for a future for the Showground has been in progress for some years
Alistair Beattie, interim chief executive of the East of England Agricultural Society, said, “The end of the three-day agricultural show in 2012 meant that the showground was no longer essential to the future of the Society.

“Our alliance with AEPG allows the development of the leisure facilities and wider site, leaving the Society to focus on its charitable aims of promoting agriculture, education, and rural life.”

EEAS AND AEPG

A new strategic alliance for the East of England Showground.

The East of England Agricultural Society, owner of the East of England Showground, has entered into a land promotion agreement with Asset Earning Power Group (AEPG) to enhance the existing leisure offer and develop the 165-acre site.

Alistair Beattie, interim CEO of the East of England Agricultural Society, said, “The end of the three-day agricultural show in 2012 meant that the showground was no longer essential to the future of the Society. Our alliance with AEPG allows the development of the leisure facilities and wider site, leaving the Society to focus on its charitable aims of promoting agriculture, education, and rural life.

“This collaboration with AEPG will enable us to develop our initiatives and engage with other organisations to deliver tangible outcomes, such as our association with Anglia Ruskin University, Peterborough, on the content of agriculture-related educational courses.

“The Society is delighted to support the continued operation of the East of England Arena as a centre for events in the city and the region, and we are excited by AEPG’s proposals for new leisure facilities on the site. The Trustees of the Society were keen to avoid the loss of this important amenity which is an asset to the City of Peterborough and the retention of employment on the site,” concluded Beattie.

Asset Earning Power Group (AEPG) Ltd. has an extensive background in land and residential development; health; leisure; and hospitality. This combination enables AEPG to create highly exciting mixed-use residential and leisure developments. Ashley Butterfield, CEO of AEPG commented: “We’re thrilled to have entered into an alliance with the East of England Agricultural Society to enhance the site as a new destination to live in the city with an exceptional leisure and events offer at its heart. This will create enormous benefits for people living and working in Peterborough.

“The site has vast potential. AEPG plans to create a considered development with leading-edge leisure facilities for the local community as well as the wider public. It is expected this will create in excess of 400 jobs.

“AEPG’s team are preparing a master plan for a new type of housing development that will combine a unique lifestyle with aspirational homes set within a beautiful, landscaped environment. A planning application will be submitted in the Spring of 2022 for a scheme that is in accordance with the site allocation and policies of the 2019 adopted local plan.

“We will be consulting about our plans before they are finalised and a planning application is submitted, and look forward to sharing updates as the plans develop.”
